Adios January!

I count down this month every year. I feel bad about counting down days of my life, but in the interest of full disclosure, I admit this freely.

That being said, this post is not about me being a Negative Nancy.

Instead, I'm writing about all the awesome things that have happened for Brandon and I this week.

  1. I made bomb grades this semester. Seriously, I'm so proud of myself. 
  2. Brandon had his yearly review and got a serious raise! I'm so proud of him. 
  3. We own our cars. I feel like that is a little personal accomplishment. And also, let's be honest, it's extra money for running stuff! I mean....for things around the house. You know ...that we need. 
Anyways, just wanted to record our great week!

Wednesday is "Giver" Day.

I've already written a post about my resolutions for this year and a post about my words for this year. But I want to amend both posts.

My love language is words. It comes naturally to me. But I don't want easy. I want to stretch myself and work on the love language of gifts.

I want to be a better giver in all aspects. It doesn't matter the size, shape, or amount of what I give as long as I am putting back out into the world what has been given to me: love.

So I'm putting it here because I want and operate well on accountability.

Healthy Train Tuesday: Earning it.

This Week's Loss: 1.9 pounds. HOLLAH!!

Total Loss: 63.4 pounds

Starting Weight: 239 pounds

Current Weight: 175.6 pounds

Pounds to Goal Weight: 25.6 pounds

What I craved this week: In order...
  1. Cake. I blame Ellen DeGeneres. 
  2. And pepperoni pizza with ranch and Pepsi. Apparently, I'm craving heartburn. Also, I blame this craving on Gilmore Girls. 
  3. Also, Iced Tea. And fro-yo from those fancy fro-yo places. I blame these two cravings on the Insta.

What I noticed was different about my body: My long run was 5 miles this week. My average pace was under 12 minutes. I know that is slow-thirty for some people, but for me that is progress! I attribute this to my weight loss and also to putting in the time. So I guess what I'm trying to say is JUST KEEP RUNNING! It all pays off!

Workouts I did this week: Hit all three of my runs including a 5 miler. Boo-freaking-yah!

Personal Goal for this week: I've got a few.
  • This weekend we're celebrating with friends. Why are we celebrating? Oh you know because I had a BOMB DOT COM semester!
  • Also, this is Super Bowl Sunday. (Part of you are like Duh Sam!) 
  • So I guess I need to just plan for both of these events!
  • Hit all my runs. My running partner took a spill in the snow the other day and she is out for at least a few weeks. Running is a whole lot easier with a running buddy. So I'm gonna start small with this week and just keep at it.

Frame of Mind: I'm worried about this week. I lost this last week, and I really want to stay on track. I don't want to ruin all the hard work I put in this week because of BBQ food and the Super Bowl. I'm planning for it, but still. I'm just trying to be honest.

Because it's fun! Also, because it's an outlet for me. I'm a law student, so I need a place to just be me that doesn't include commentary from my entire hometown a/k/a Facebook.

Monday Mumblings.

I mumble on Mondays. It's a thing. You get used to it.

  • A few weeks ago I was craving Fruit Loops. So two weeks ago, we bought the Wal-Mart jumbo bag version. I have had one Hugh Jass bowl since said purchase. I have been plotting my next bowl of Fruit Loops for days since. I only realized Friday night that I could have a small bowl every day for breakfast if I really wanted AND it would be minimal points too! What a concept! In case, you wondered my blondeness had disappeared, never fear.
  • I watched Ellen's birthday show on Saturday. Not gonna lie it was lame, but since then I've been craving a piece of cake like it's my job. I'm not talking about any kind of cake. I'm talking one of the cakes from the grocery store bakery. You know the kind that have the big roses from the 80s on them. Too bad they don't make slices you could buy.
  • Sugar gets onto the couch or the bed solely for the purpose of jumping on Paisley. It's hilarious. 
  • To me, it looks like Kim K has had so much botox, her face can't move to do the ugly cry face. She's barely 30 right?
  • Today I plan to clean, go to a meeting, hit a run/workout (this depends on whether it's raining or not), and then do homework. Yes, in that order. I also plan to put on music that I run to while I clean so I'll get in a workout while I clean. And yes I don't like running in the rain. I'll run in the snow, but not in the rain. Don't ask me how that makes sense in my mind.
  • After last night, I want to see Argo like yesterday. And I guess I need to see Silver Linings Playbook because apparently Jennifer Lawrence is really good in it. It's hard for me to believe.

Friday Confessional: Round Dos

The Juice is Worth the Squeeze

I know we just had the Inauguration on Monday, but Hillary 2016 has me really excited. Too soon? I don't care. I can't say that on Facebook because I feel like it's standing in the town square with all your FB friends there listening to you. And if you think about it, people have FB friends to make up a small town. I'm from a small town and news travels really fast when you do or say something stupid. People don't think about that concept enough in my opinion. I also don't want to say anything on The Twitter about it because The Twitter doesn't like political commentary at all.

Even though I say I don't have the nerve to wear a bikini in public, in the back of my mind, it's what I'm working towards for this summer. I'm gonna need a margarita in hand if I get up the nerve to do so.

Every time I watch Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, I have a sudden urge to buy a good black nail polish. They also wear a lot of the shade that looks like the peach crayon from the 24 pack of Crayolas. I like that color a lot too and have the same urge to buy it as well. However, this urge disappears entirely once the show is over...because I forget about it.

I can't decide which eye I think is prettier on Sugar. For those of you that don't know Sugar has a blue eye and a brown eye. It's very cool and adds a certain mystique to her personality. Anyhow, I can't decide which one is prettier. Is that weird? I don't care if it is.

Even though I consider running this winter in Michigan, a personal rite of passage for me, running in the snow is like running in the sand. It's hard and makes me wish for summer time when I can run in a tank top and compression shorts.

I consider People my legitimate source for news on all things American celebrity. I consider The Daily Mail my legitimate source for news on all things British Royal Family. Anything other than these two sources of news are not to be considered reliable.

Wednesday is "Dark" Day.

Dark Day: a particularly rough day; Luke from Gilmore Girls had a dark day every year on the anniversary of his father's passing;

18 years ago today I was 10 years old. My sister was 7 years old. It was a particularly cold day for January in Oklahoma. We even had some snow the day before.

18 years ago today is also the day my Pappaw passed away from colon cancer. It's one of the only times I've ever seen my daddy cry. He and my Pappaw were the best of friends. (I think it's part of why I hate the winter so much. I know it definitely is why I'm not a fan of January.)

I often wonder what life would have been like had my Pappaw survived cancer. I wonder what he would have thought of Loren and Will. I wonder what he would have thought about all the cousins, my sister and I moving away for college, medical school and law school. I also wonder what he would have thought of Brandon.

There will always be good and bad memories that I will have, and I hope to someday honor his memory.

Healthy Train Tuesday: Bad News Bears.

This Week's Loss Gain: 3.5  pounds...Yeah. It was bad.

Total Loss: 61.5 pounds

Starting Weight: 239 pounds

Current Weight: 177.5

Pounds to goal weight: 27. 5 pounds

What I craved this week: Not a whole lot. Honestly, it was a bad week in the food department for me. I ate everything in sight. I did okay until Friday night. We went out and then it was a hot mess after that. I was hungry all weekend long.

It has definitely shaped my goals for this week.

What I noticed was different about my body: I can't have more than one alcoholic beverage or it's like it becomes gel that sticks to my body that doesn't want to leave. I had two rum and cokes Friday night and I just could not get rid of them all weekend. The other thing I noticed was that when I eat crap, I have a hard time stopping. It makes me feel bad of course, but it also increases my appetite for crap. It's like I have to go through a withdrawal

Workouts I did this week: I HIT ALL THREE OF MY RUNS!! On Sunday, I ran just over 4 miles. It was a whopping 18 degrees out. And I had to do hill repeats! It was AWESOME!! It seriously made me glad to be building up my mileage again. It also made me fall in love with running again. I got a definite rush.

Personal Goal for this week: I have a couple.

  • It is supposed to snow all week long, so my goal is to get out there and hit my runs EVEN in the snow! 
  • I also have a goal to stay under my daily points every day. If I go over I only want it to be by 3-4 points at most. I really don't want to touch my flex points at all.

What I'm looking forward to: Busting my butt this week to lose the weight!

Frame of Mind: I had a rough week. I did not want to post this blog at all, but I'm posting it for the accountability to push me to keep going. I fell down this week, but today starts a new week and I'm getting back up AGAIN.

Think Positive.

I've had some questions about how I keep going when I'm running recently. Most of the time, my answer is that somewhere in the summertime last year, I just made my peace with running. It's my therapy. When I'm on the road, I think about what is troubling me or just about life and the future in general. If I haven't had an opportunity to think through a situation, I do when I'm running. I do this most on Sundays when I'm at my group runs. Even though other people are around, I still am running on my own and so I'm left to my thoughts.

But it wasn't until today that I realized that the question is about what did I do until I made my peace with running. How did I get through my runs and not stop?

When I run, the only person I can rely on is myself and so that means that running is entirely a mental game. This can make or break a person. Before I made my peace with running, it was all but breaking me.

For me, my mind races a thousand miles a minute when I'm thinking through a situation, including running. I would think about how much longer I had from the moment I started running. When I started I was doing the Couch to 5K program, so I would think about how much longer I had until I got to walk again. I would get down on the fact that I'd only gone a couple of miles. The list of thoughts I had was endless.

Then one day, one of my running buddies said, "Think about what you're doing instead of what you're not."

Simple, but it pierced right through me.

I changed my thinking.
  • "Yeah, it's only a half a mile, but that's half a mile I don't have to run!" 
  • "I earned 9 activity points! They'll knock off some flex points I used yesterday!"
  • " This 3 and a half miles counts towards my long term goal!" 
And before I knew it, I was saying things like...

  • "I am running 8 miles for the first time ever today!" 
  • "I ran a half-marathon today!" 
And today when I ran, I thought to myself. "Today you're running 4 miles including hills in 18 degree weather! That's stinking awesome!" 

Those runs were some of my best days. It's all because I turned my thinking into positive and I didn't let anyone take it from me.

It's how I made my peace with running.

  • I'm not a fan of Kim Kardashian by any means, but I think Kris Humphries is WAY worse. So I guess that makes me Team Kim in a way. Ew.
  • Going to see Les Miserables today. I'm way more excited about this than I should be. 
  • I'm currently sitting in a class writing this because I am bored to tears.
  • I've been on the scale two days in a row and it is wigging me out. I've gained, but it's because I haven' know in a couple of days. 
  • I hate running in the cold. I know it's supposed to be so cool and hard core and all of that, but I hate it. I will give you that it's pretty to see the snow and all. But running in the warm sunshine is much much much much much much more appealing to me. 
  • My baby sister has been asking lots of political questions lately. It makes my government nerd heart happy.
  • I've been over American Idol since Simon Cowell left, but I still have an opinion on the Nicki vs. Mariah throwdown. I love the music of both. Not so much Mariah's new stuff, but that's neither here nor there. I do not love the women. They both seem immature to me. I wouldn't pick one over the other because of how immature they seem to me.
  • This past fall I became a person who DVRs Ellen daily. They're switching the time that she is coming on here and it has been a bad taste in my mouth for a week now. No joke.

Annnnnnnd...a Weight Watchers Vlog!

Erin asked me "Do you use your weekly points or just save them for a "just in case" moment?

  1. I'm not an expert. These are just things that work for me. 
  2. My dogs are the photo-bombingest dogs alive. 
  3. Example: If you hear a grunting noise, that's because Pais is sitting right beside me chewing on a toy. Also, Sugar is obviously in the background. She was in the other room and came in here when I started messing with the video.
  4. This video isn't the best quality. My bad.
  5. I still say "Um" A LOT. Oh well.
  6. I forgot to say drink lots of water! You should drink lots of water. It's good for you.
  7. Sorry for talking about your digestive system aka pooping. I'm a runner. Runners talk about it. Also, poop happens.

Healthy Train Tuesday: The Two Week Mark

This Week's Loss: 1 pound

Total Loss: 65 pounds!!

Starting Weight: 239 pounds

Current Weight: 174 pounds

Pounds to goal weight: 24 pounds

What I craved this week: Pizza and a cheeseburger and fries and RANCH. I do this every time I watch Gilmore Girls, because that's basically their diet. I resisted, but dang, I foresee both of those options being my "break meal" in the weeks to come.

What I noticed was different about my body: I haven't had a pop since before the New Year. I don't really miss it. I crave water all the time right now. I also pee a ton, but listen, I feel so much better. I also wanted to show you this picture I found online regarding what pop does to our systems.

Workouts I did this week: None and I'm so aggravated with myself. I have been in a big funk the past week. The good news is that I can feel myself getting annoyed which means the fire in my belly is not too far behind.

Personal Goal for this week: HIT MY RUNS. I have the food thing conquered. I just want to hit my runs.

The Weekend Report

I want to write on my blog about something that doesn't have to do with me having the winter blues or health updates. I also want to get into the practice of writing on the regular whether I have something to say or not.

This weekend was uneventful in our house. Friday night I had a meeting for one of the organizations I'm involved in and didn't get out until 11pm. We headed out for a little bit afterwards. We had to wait at a bar that we never had to wait at before, but we finally got in when the people in front of us were extremely obnoxious about the wait.

Saturday was spent watching Gilmore Girls and doing homework for the both of us. Brandon was working on the beginning stages of his doctorate and I organized my calendar and binder for the semester. I think things are going to pick up for me this weekend. I'm glad for it because it will get me out of the house. We also watched the Miss America pageant and The Twitter was a hopping that night. There were lots of funny tweets and it made me miss the Twitter of yore. (Shut it. I've been reading about the Queen like it's my job and also watching a LOT of Downton Abbey. "Yore" was bound to happen. You just be glad I haven't dropped a "jolly" yet.)

ANYWAY. You know what Twitter I'm talking about...the one where it was just a fun place to be. We also watched War Horse. I thought it was good, but it was slow and I wasn't impressed as I thought I was supposed to be.

I skipped my Sunday morning run because of a ton of stupid excuses. (It was drizzling which is miserable on contacts. It was cold. I stayed up a little late the night before. Blah blah blah. All of which were total crap.) I got on The Twitter and Insta and immediately regretted my decision not to go. Like I mentioned over the weekend, I have a lot weighing on me lately and I should have gone to work through it. Running really is some of the best cheap therapy a girl can buy. (Side note: I really am over thinking and thinking. I'm breaking out of my funk starting tomorrow.) It seemed like everyone was out for a run....except me. I say all of this because 1) I want you to know that I struggle with the excuses too. 2) I want to keep myself accountable and this blog has been one of my biggest sources of accountability. So please call me out on it.

I got up, watched more Gilmore Girls and then read the rest of the day. It was a book about Queen Elizabeth II. I also watched the Golden Globes. I gotta say I was underwhelmed by the dresses this year. I also was severely confused by Jodie Foster's speech. We all knew she was gay....why the round about way to say that she was all over again? I will admit I bawled when she talked to her mom who suffers from dementia. Dementia and Alzheimer's in my opinion are the cruelest ways to die. I hope her momma recognized her last night when she received one of the most prestigious honors in the film industry.

Today was spent cleaning and straightening up the house. I watched Downton Abbey, snuggled with the dogs and read more about the Queen. My school books might have mocked me mercilessly all day every time I walked passed them. I also scoured flights to see how cheap it would be to go somewhere warm. I didn't go for a run again today. I let the funk overtake me. I'm not sure what my deal is, but I thought several times today that I need a race to run so I'll get my butt in gear. So if I could combine cheap airfare and a cheap race to run, I might just achieve that goal.

Now I really need to spend a little bit of time with my books before bedtime.

My Word(s) for 2013.

My heart has been really heavy the last few days regarding a situation in my life. I don't really feel like I have the option to share here what is going on and that bothers me because my blog has always been my little corner of the world.

I am fine. There is nothing health-wise going on and Brandon is fine too. Please know that.

Not so coincidentally, I've been thinking about what my "word" for 2013 should be. I am fascinated by all the posts written so far on the matter and it's something that I've been thinking about a lot in the past weeks.

The above situation that I'm referring to has to do with my word or words partly. I have two. It's not something astronomical, but at the same time I suppose you're not surprised that a law student can't just pick one word.

My two words are adventure and friendship.

Friendship after marriage is a funny thing. It's almost an isolation that you can't escape. Your single friends don't really understand where you're coming from. It's almost like there are only certain situations it's okay to call the "married friends" to participate. The ones who are part of serious couples want to do everything in packs. They don't understand that when you hang out with someone who is married, it doesn't always have to include the boys. There are two types of married people, married people with kids and married people without kids. That last group breaks down further into people who want to have kids eventually and people who don't want to have kids eventually. When you're in the latter group, it's just an awk-a - awkward place to be. People who have kids don't know what to do with us "Withouts" sometimes.

When I first started writing this blog, I wrote about how I wished for friends for the both of us. I still wish for that, but I really wish for a good friend for me. I want someone who is like me and gets me. And I want you to know that I'm not without friends. I have my sister and friends from college and tons of wonderful friends from The Twitter and blogosphere. I just wish they were down the street. I would love for that to happen in the next months or so, but I'm a realist and I know that I'll get sucked into law school again in about a week. I'll have time for my studies, running, Brandon and extracurriculars from school. I'll be okay and I'll be busy. I just need a good solid pal. 

So my hope for friendship for this year is really about the end of the year when I move back to Oklahoma which leads me to my next word: adventure.

In the meantime, I really hope that I take some risks and do things that I want to do...even if it means that others aren't necessarily interested in doing what I'm doing.

One Year.

Tuesday night we went grocery shopping. We went down the aisle where all the Totinos Rolls and chicken nuggets and frozen pizza and french fries were. I told Brandon that it was amazing how much could change in a year and then I remembered I had an anniversary coming up later that week.

A year ago today I stepped on the scale and could not believe what I saw.

I had written a post a week and a half earlier about taking care of myself, but it wasn't until that moment that I realized what I had done. I didn't realize just how bad I had let things get.

I hopped on my blog and wrote this post.

(Side note: I didn't quite hit 70 pounds...but I will soon.)

And then I did two things. I put on my workout clothes and wrote a grocery list. 

After we hit up the grocery store, I hit the gym at our apartment. It was scary and I felt like people were judging me the whole time. After all, I was 239 pounds and my face was super red after about five minutes on the treadmill I'm sure.

No one ever said anything to me, but I do remember a day or two later, someone grumbling on Facebook about all the new people at the gym. And this is my PSA/soapbox moment of this blog post.

A year ago today I was the new girl. I'm down 64 pounds and counting because I kept at it and used jerk comments on Facebook to fuel me to go even further. But not everyone is like me. (Don't get me wrong, it still hurt.) Some men and women are very tender hearted and going to the gym or starting a new running group can be very intimidating and overwhelming. One harsh word or comment can destroy a person. They will hit the door and be gone from taking back their life for another year. A year that could have been spent taking back their health and adding years to their life. Obesity is a real problem in this country. If you need evidence of that, simply look around you. You don't have to watch Biggest Loser to find them. And also? Fat people are aware they are fat. They don't need anyone making snide comments to remind them. Instead, give them a smile, or a "Good job!" or a "Way to go!"

You will never know how far that smile or encouraging word can push a person. I know that your encouraging words have helped me 64 pounds and run a half-marathon.

I am really proud of how far I've come and I can't wait to see what January 10th holds for next year!

SO WHAT Wednesday!

I'm linking up with Shannon for my very first So What Wednesday! I'm kind of having a day, so this post seemed appropriate.

SO WHAT!  If...

  • I didn't shower for the 2nd day in a row. I'm going for a run tomorrow morning. Showering today would be pointless!
  • I'm obsessed with all things British Royal History? It's fascinating and the only monarchy that people take seriously in the world today.
  • My house is a wreck still! At least the Christmas tree and decorations are down! 
  • I'm wishing for summer like it's my job. It's colder than a witch's titty up here in Michigan! 
  • I'm ticked that I can't eat like I normally do. I have a cancre sore and it hurts to eat. I cried when I ate an apple today. Cried.
  • I haven't started working on my arms yet. It'll happen. 
  • I've watched Pitch Perfect 10 times since I bought it. The movie is hilarious.

Healthy Train Tuesday: Round Dos

This Week's Past Three Weeks' Loss: 1.8 pounds!

I am really proud of this. I gained a little back this week because I got happy about initially losing over two pounds. It happens. But today starts another week and I can get rid of it easily.

Total Loss: 64 pounds!!

Starting Weight: 239 pounds

Current Weight: 175 pounds

Pounds to goal weight: 25 pounds!!!

What I craved this week: Chicken wings. I don't know what it is about sauce on chicken wings, but they are fabulous. Add some celery and ranch and then people start shouting AMEN! But dang if those little things don't add up!

What I noticed was different about my body:  I watched Biggest Loser Sunday and Monday night. There are several women who are my height and starting weight. It floored me to think that my body used to look like that.

Workouts I did this week: I started my year of running this past Sunday. I was dreading going, but I was so glad I did. I got to run in the snow for the first time and it felt so good to get out on the road again.

Personal Goal for this week: Hit all my runs and lose 2 pounds. I think it's going to be hard, but doable.

What I’m looking forward to: Summer time. No joke. I know we are not supposed to wish our lives away, but I really am looking forward to summer this year. I am ready to feel the heat of the sun on my back and to get my runner's tan again.

Frame of Mind: I'll admit I've got a bit of the post-holiday funk going on right now, but this is the first time that I've had it and been running. So I'm hoping that it helps get the funk out of my system sooner rather than later.

Monday Mumblings...

I mumble on Mondays. It's a thing. You get used to it.

  • I am notorious for having the funk post holidays. It happens even before I take down my decorations. Today I've got it and have had it off and on since last week. It's why I've not really been into writing on here. I am just kind of indifferent to everything and everyone right now. Whatev. I'm running so surely it'll pass.
  • Watched Downton Abbey last night and LOVED it. So well written and it fuels my love for all things England. 
  • I am so glad that Jillian is back on The Biggest Loser. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I would love to have her as a trainer. 
  • I want to make a few changes around the house. I'm not sure what I'll do yet, but I've definitely been thinking seriously about it. 
  • Also need to do a major spring clean this year. 
  • More and more I have a feeling I need to just delete Facebook.
  • We got Sugar a big girl kennel for her Christmas present. She slept in it last night and did really well. We need to re-arrange our room a bit so her kennel can be in there with us. 
  • I have class tomorrow and I looked up my assignments about 10 minutes ago. NBD.

Healthy Train Tuesday: ALL ABOARD!

Hi y'all! As you can see, this is a pretty basic deal. Fill in the answers. If you don't want to list your weight that is totally fine. I didn't list mine for a long time either. If you have other fields you don't want to fill in that's totally cool too! 

This Week's Loss: I haven't seen a scale in two weeks so I don't know what this is. I have a feeling it's a gain. But I still wanted to put it there for others to follow along.

Total Loss: Last I checked it was 62.2 pounds.

Starting Weight: 239 pounds

Current Weight: It was 176.8 last I checked.

Pounds to Goal Weight: 26.8 pounds. That doesn't seem like a whole lot for some reason.

What I craved this week: Ha! Ha Ha! Ha Ha Ha Ha HA Ha Ha!! I have pretty much had whatever I wanted while on break. I didn't eat more than one plate. But I still had a lot of things I shouldn't have.

What I noticed was different about my body: I got the flu on Christmas Day. Thank you Santa Claus! But my body processed the sickness a lot quicker than it used to and I attribute this entirely to all the hard work I've done this year.

Workouts I did this week: I ran once with my brother and then I got the flu on Christmas.

Personal Goal for this week: Get settled for the semester and ready for my new run schedule. I really would like to run 4 times a week and I think it might be doable.

What I'm looking forward to: This should be another big year for us and I can hardly wait to see how it all unfolds!

Frame of mind: There is something about a fresh start that I just really love. And I'm using that energy to fuel into the last almost 30 pounds to go!
