Fan Mail

It was bound to happen.

I mean, when you're famous like me, I get requests to send fan mail regularly.

They ask for my autograph.
I've been asked to be on magazine covers.
Avoiding the puparazzi is a regular issue I face.
Someone always wants to know what I tweet and who I'm dating.
Ellen and Kathie and Hoda are in a bidding war to see where I'll appear first. 

And OF COURSE, people are trying to copy my latest move or style choice.

It's hard being this cool. And, well what can I say?

I look good. 

So I suppose this was only the natural progression that I start posing for holiday hardware like these awesome Christmas party napkins.


So maybe, it wasn't for me. Maybe the package was for my momma from Miss Kara, because she ran her first half-marathon on Sunday.

BUT! Someone, somewhere stole my picture because that is me y'all.

Well. It is.

Now go away kid. You're botherin' me and my Royal Frenchiness self needs beauty sleep.

The Overwhelming To-Do List

On Monday, I found I had a hard time focusing all day because of the race high. I was still very happy with myself and my accomplishment. Tuesday, I woke up with a looming to-do list that I had to get through for that day. I did it..sorta.

Today is no different.

I have to-do lists for packing, cleaning, school stuff, classes, assignments for the individual classes, sub-parts to those assignments, etc. Yes, there are multiple and yes, I have two alone for today and tomorrow's tasks.

The to-do lists go on and on and on. They're the song that never ends. 

At the same time, I live and die by a good to-do list. They make me feel in control. When I feel super stressed and I'm ready to pull my hair out, I make a to-do list of what I need to do and feel relief for all of two seconds.

Because once you've made the to-do list, you have to mark off all the "to-do's" on it. I admit sometimes, I write down simple things that I've already done just to get myself to continue watching The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

I don't really know where I was going with this post, other than to say that I'm super busy. I have no life and I hate it. I feel really behind on my blog, The Twitter, etc. BUT, those are sacrifices that have to happen sometimes so I can get my degree.

Happy matter how hairy it may seem.

No Pain. No Gain.

I am sore today. When I walk I am sure it is visible. In my mind, I feel like I look like a crotchety old woman because I am moving so slow.


Yesterday, I ran Mile 1 for myself. I ran for all the hard work I've done this year and all the hard work I have left to do.

Yesterday, I ran Mile 2 for my Great Grandpa Lowell. He suffered from Muscular Dystrophy and my shirt featured his name. I ran because he physically could not.

Yesterday, I ran Mile 3 for my husband, Brandon. He saw me and loved me from the first day we met. I ran because soon he will see me at a weight that he's never seen me before in his entire life and I want to hit that goal so badly.

Yesterday, I ran Mile 4 for kicking law school's ass. Being in a doctorate program is HARD. So part of that run was to relieve the stress of school.

Yesterday, I ran Mile 5 for all the fun clothes I can now wear because I FIT INTO THEM. Running is a huge part of what got me to that point.

Yesterday, I ran Mile 6 for my mom and my dad. My dad was limited early on in life and has never been able to play sports and my mom has had knee surgery, so I ran for them, because they could not.

Yesterday, I ran Mile 7 for Loren and Will. I want to always inspire my baby sister and brother to go for their dreams.

Yesterday, I ran Mile 8 for God. I knew that from this point out, I would need His strength more than ever to get me through the rest of the race.

Yesterday, I ran Mile 9 for beg because she came to run with me. It meant the world that she came all the way to Michigan to run with me.

Yesterday, I ran Mile 10 for the BOBB girls. BOBB girls are girls who have big old booties and boobs. I ran for the current BOBB girls and the former BOBB girls. I was one of those girls and my sister was one of those girls. So I ran to encourage you to get up, because if I can, you can!

Yesterday, I ran Mile 11 for my sister Jessi. She inspires me daily to keep going and I am super proud of her.

Yesterday, I ran Mile 12 for all the milestones I've hit this year. Over 50 pounds ago, I would not have been able to run one mile let alone 12. (Also, I'd never run 12 miles before!)

Yesterday, I ran Mile 13 and 13.1 for myself because I had to know what it felt like to run a half-marathon.

AND ALL of it was completely worth it.

I ran my very first half-marathon today. Booyah.

Yesterday, we headed to the Expo for the Detroit Free Press International Marathon check-in. I picked up my shirt, bib, a bag of papers, but no fun goodies. I bought a trucker hat with the emblem on it and I've always wanted one of those magnets for my car. I bought the personalized one and I think I may stick it on my fridge for now. I still want to buy some more half-marathon stuff, but at this point, I'm refraining.

We then went to pick up beg who finally made it into Michigan after a missed connection due to the bain that is US Airways. Ran her to the Expo, then came home and had a wonderful dinner of chicken alfredo with broccoli. Before we knew it, it was time to get our things ready to go for the next day. Of course, it took me a bit to fall asleep. OF COURSE IT DID.

4am was here all too early and yet I was ready to get out of bed.We got dressed and I took a before picture. We drove to downtown Detroit, parked, and found our way to our corral.


It was time to run! 

Miles 1-2 were crowded (Hello 23,000 people!) and had us headed to Canada. I have never been to Canada before and today was my first time to go! How many people can say that her first time into a foreign country she literally ran into it?  It was lots of fun and a definite adrenaline rush. We ran across the Ambassador Bridge. This bridge turned out to be the hill that never ended...I thought we were never going to make it.

Miles 3-6 we ran along the Detroit River. It was absolutely breathtaking and so cool to see all the major car corporations all lit up as we ran. I also loved being able to see Comerica Park which is home to the Detroit Tigers and also Ford Field which is home to the Detroit Lions and then finally we could see the Joe Louis Arena, home to the Detroit Red Wings.

Mile 7 was when we headed back to US Soil, but to get there we had to run in a tunnel that is literally under water. It was very cool and very freaky at the same time! Half way through the tunnel, we crossed into the US again. I will say that it was very tight in there and hot! When we got outside, it was such a huge difference in temperature and also a major relief at the same time.

Miles 8-9 we saw Brandon and I couldn't look at him all that much because I was afraid I'd burst into tears. But I was REALLY happy to see him. We kept running and like clock work, my body started to hurt at 8.5. I'm not really sure what it is that makes me notice it, but I am determined to work on this trouble area. I think it may be "my wall." It makes it super easy for me to stop and walk more than I should as opposed to walking only through the water stations.

Miles 10-11 were spent in Corktown, which is Detroit's oldest neighborhood. I loved running through here because the houses were wonderfully restored and the history nerd in me could not get enough. I realized that I only had a 5k left to go! And at this point, I got an adrenaline rush from the fact that I had never ran further than 11 miles. I should note that when I walk, it's usually not very long at all, it just gives me some relief. I sometimes think that if I kept going, I wouldn't hurt as bad either because I have to use extra motion to propel myself to go again. This is also where I had to take a restroom break. I'm not talking numero uno either. By the way, runners are very open about their poop. It can change your whole running game, literally. We all know when we go and when we need to go before it could be a problem.


Mile 12-13.1 I wanted so badly to not stop until the race was over, but again I was sore. I am wondering if I didn't hydrate enough the day before. I will say that my hips and knees weren't as sore as they usually were, but they were still pretty bad. I felt bad because I held up beg, but she didn't seem to mind me slowing up. (Side note: when you run for long periods of time, it's very normal to be sore. I have runner's knee which is a common side effect of long distance running.)

We stopped at one last water station before we rounded the corner where the marathoners split from us. When we rounded the corner where the marathoners split from us, I could see the finish line.

It was time to finish the race.

I hit the magical adrenaline rush, cranked it into high gear and Gangnam Style came onto my iPod.

The last 1/4 of a mile I was sprinting.

beg grabbed my hand and we crossed the finish line like bosses.

It was and is one of the proudest moments of my life.

It was a great first half-marathon with lots of cool milestones along the way for me and I'll never forget it for as long as I live. 

Post-Race: I had a banana and water. I think that I ate the banana just a little too quickly and I chugged the water a little more than I should because I got a little nauseous. It passed quickly and I was ready to take a shower asap. On the way back to the car, Brandon asked me if I was ready to train for the full, and I gave him this look.

This is my first half-marathon time. Key word "first" which means there will be more and also you may infer that I intend to break this record.

I had a great day and I finished. Those were my goals for the day and I met both of them.

I proved to myself that, in fact, "I can do all things [ including run a half-marathon] through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13).

Today's the day!

I run my very first half-marathon today!

The race includes running one of the miles in an UNDERWATER tunnel.

ALSO I'll go to Canada for the very first time by literally running in there.

I don't know about you, but that's pretty stinkin' cool as far as I'm concerned!

My goals for tomorrow include: 
  1. To finish!!
  2. To have a great time!!

Good Life Decisions Updates.

I feel like this blog has been nothing but "weight loss this" and "weight loss that" lately. I'm sure more than half of my 10 readers are ready for something different.

I also have to admit that sometimes I struggle with the fact that bloggers who have been blogging for a hot second are bigger than mine and I've been writing for almost five years now. Is it because I don't have kids? Am I not funny? Why don't people like me? I suppose that's a different post for a different day. I should note that I don't want this little paragraph to come across as having "lost my way" as a blogger. I've always blogged what I wanted to blog and not what the latest trends are...maybe that's the problem. I don't know. But I don't want to write a blog post about "losing my way" as a blogger because I'm not a fan of reading them.

At the same time, I can't help but wonder why...

Back to where I started one major side note ago: life decisions.

Brandon and I have been very busy bees.

  • Brandon graduates with his MBA VERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRY soon! He is thinking about going for his doctorate. 
  • I have a year left of school. I can't believe how quickly time has gone by. 
  • Paisley is still an only child, but that is soon to change because we're bringing home a Boxer puppy soon! Our friends and family have started taking donations for puppy therapy for Paisley. Bless her heart, she's super spoiled.
  • We have a trip home coming up very soon. I'm excited to see our families and friends. 
  • Isn't she cute?
    • Side note : My sister and I are going to do a vlog about weight loss. If you have questions, send them our way! 
    • Another side note: Paisley will be taken care of while we're home and getting lots of special one on one attention before her life is changed forever.
  • We found out that we get to go home to Oklahoma for Christmas!
  • Annnnnnnnnnnnnd, I'm running a teeny tiny half-marathon this weekend with one of my law besties Em, and one of my bloggy besties, b.e.g.
It's been lots of fun and I'm super proud of both of us.

What I wear when I go for a run...

 I thought I'd blog about what I wear when I run. I'm still really new at this, so there are things that I've tried and liked and things that I've tried and not liked. This is my current combo that works for me.

1. A Doo-rag - Some people call this a bandana. I like my hair to be out of my face. I have short hair and so I don't have the luxury of putting it up in a pony-tail. So a bandana/doo-rag it is.

2. Running Tech Shirt - Brand wise I'm not picky in this area. It's the material that counts. Tech shirt material is kinda slick. The important part is that this material wicks away moisture and keeps you cool while you run and also gets rid of moisture so you don't get cold either.

3. Sports Bra - I feel like this should be an obvious one, but you'd be surprised at how many don't wear one. I like the Champion brand that can be found at Target. The elasticity is wonderful if you're well endowed like I am.

4. Compression Shorts/Capris - I prefer compression shorts because they hold my jiggly parts still while I run, plain and simple. I also run hot. So since it's colder out, I am not ready for full on pants at this point. That's just my personal preference.

5. Running Socks -I think this is a preference thing. I will say that wearing socks that are made for running do make a difference in my opinion. I like the ones that have no ankle to them. I think it's because I get so hot so easily.

6. Running Shoes -If you're want to go running at all, get fitted. Go to an actual store that's just for running and see what they say. I run in Brooks Pure Cadence, just in case you're wondering.

7. Arm Band -I have my iPhone on me all the time for safety reasons. I wear one of those arm bands with it in it. I got mine at Wal-Mart for less than 10 bucks!

8. iPod -Good music is a must! I didn't know this, but apparently there is a big debate among the running community about wearing headphones and listening to music while you run. I turn my music down to at least half the level that I'd normally listen to my music at because I like to know when bikers are coming along or cars are coming. I also say hi to other runners I see or if I have a running buddy. Sometimes I turn it down a whole lot so I can be a good running buddy as well. Again, all of this is on your personal preference.

9. Fuel Belt - In my fuel belt, I carry tissues for emergencies, shot bloks for energy (strawberry is my favorite flavor!) and of course there is a place for my water bottle! The fuel belt I have also has a built in ID tag with all my information should I have a medical emergency.

10. Compression Socks -I just started wearing these post run within the last few weeks post run. My muscles aren't as tight post run and I will probably use them after my half-marathon!

11. Post Long Run Recovery Routine - Everyone has one whether they know it or not. Some runners are very picky about what they do post run. Others are go with the flow. I'm somewhere in between. I usually eat breakfast after I'm finished, shower, and take a good nap. It's amazing what rest does for my sore muscles. I feel like half of a new woman after I wake up!

Healthy Train Tuesday: Three Week Re-Cap

This [past three ] Week's Loss : 3.2 pounds!!!

Total Loss: 56.2 pounds!!  As Si Robertson would say, "BOOYAH!"

What I craved this week: The first two weeks of this post, I didn't really crave anything because I ate what I wanted. The last week I didn't really crave anything because I was sick and also being really strict about my diet.

What I noticed was different about my body: My body is starting to look smaller in general now. I know I still have 30-ish pounds to go, but I can see the muscle tone really starting to take shape.

Workouts I did this week: This is kind of a hard area to re-cap because it's been so long, but I did the 11 miler, ran all that week. Then I missed my 12 mile run because Brandon had a migraine and we were up late the night before and my running coach doesn't suggest running after staying up super late. I also missed my runs this last week because I've been sick. Then when I ran on this past Sunday, I was just off because I'd been out a week, but I am happy to report that my run this morning was great and I have a new PR for my mile time!

Personal Goal for this week: I want to hit both of my 3 mile runs before the big day {Already hit one of them this morning!}

I can't believe that I get to type this next part, but... I also want to hit my 13.1 miler this week too!!!!

Things I'm diggin lately.

1. One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp - I cannot say enough wonderful things about this book. It is absolutely wonderful.

2. "I'll Be Home for Christmas" by Bing Crosby - This song can be super sad or super happy depending on your perspective. I love it for both reasons. It's been playing a ton recently in my house.

3. The Family Stone - Every time I watch this movie, I connect with it for so many reasons. It is definitely rising in my list of favorite Christmas movies.

4. Fall Clothes- I really am enjoying wearing jeans, a t-shirt, tank top, and a sweater or hoodie with rocket dogs lately. It truly is one of my favorite outfits of all time.

5. Running clothes - I know, I know. I talk about running a lot, but seriously, if I got nothing but running stuff for Christmas this year, it would be like I got diamonds. I spend a decent amount of time in them and well, as you know, I love running. So anything to do with it, I'm digging.

6. Long Tube Socks, PJ Shorts, and t-shirts - This is my go-to uniform these days as soon as I get home. It's comfortable.

(Side note: Apparently, I am really happy with clothes these days.) 

7. Michigan Fall - I tweeted about this last week, but I really do love Fall here. It's so pretty and there is nothing like it.

8.  Nashville - I really think I'm going to like this show. I love Connie Britton's character. I've heard she's excellent in Friday Night Lights. Hopefully, it doesn't disappoint.


On another note, I just wanted to say how proud I am of my sister Jessi. She's down 75 pounds and looks absolutely stunning!

Ready to toss my cookies.

One week.

I never thought I'd be writing this post. But in a week, I'm running my first half-marathon.

When I started this weight loss journey earlier this year, I didn't plan on a half-marathon being part of that journey. I literally never thought about it.

It was not part of my plan. In fact, I barely thought about running a 5K. I knew it was something I should do, but whether I would do it was another story.

And here I am.

I am so nervous just thinking about all of it. So nervous that yes, I could puke.

I honestly am just ready to be running the race already. There really is something that is just so peaceful about some good tunes, a pair of tennis shoes and the road. I'm sure that last part might sound really hokey and cheesy, but really, I do love running.

I want to take this time to say thank you to God and to my cheerleaders.

First, I literally could not have done any of this without God right there with me. I have chanted Philippians 4:13 more times than I can count and every time, God has heard me. When I was weak, He was strong EVERY SINGLE TIME. Thank you.

Second, to my cheerleaders. I couldn't have done this without you either. You push me to take one more step each week. I think about y'all when I run every time. You make me put my money where my mouth is and I am so thankful for every single one of you.

Quick Weekend Update

We had a very low key weekend in that we didn't have any major commitments to go anywhere or see anyone. It was a nice and needed break from the hustle and bustle. 

Friday, I saw Hotel Transylvania with some girlfriends and some good Mexican food. Saturday we hit up the mall, but quickly left because it was so packed you would have thought it was the Saturday before Christmas! It was nice to just be with each other.

BUT, we had a bit of a busy Saturday night. Brandon had a migraine. This isn't new for us, but he had some numbness in his right arm, hand and side of his face. So we headed to the U of M Hospital. I was totally amazed and blown away by how awesome this hospital was. We received top notch care and the facility is state of the art.

I didn't get a long run in yesterday because we got home so late. So I've gotta get that in this week at some point. I also had a scratchy throat when I woke up, but it went away once I got going for the day. However, I woke up today full of congestion and I know it's allergy stuff. I always get it this time of year. I normally wouldn't mind, but there is a certain race that is less than two weeks away that I've got to be in tip top shape for! 

I think I'm going to take another nap before class tonight. Trying to get all the rest I can in between working on projects for school and my runs. 

I have to confess that the last few weeks have been hard for me weight loss wise. I am set to lose both weeks, but I have realized that my biggest struggle in the year comes right now. All the food that I love most, I eat in the fall and early winter when the holidays roll around and that's hard for me. There are plenty of options that I can do so that it's not over the top, but it has just been hard for me to say no. For the next two weeks, I am taking super good care of myself because of the race, but that should be my mentality year round. It's just so crazy that just about the time you think you've beaten the demon, there is something else to fight.

We are weak, but He is strong!

On Sundays when I do my long runs, I really use that time to think and clear my head. The last couple of weeks before this week, I'd had a running buddy with me. It was super nice to share with one another about our struggles and before we knew it, the run was done!

However, this last week, I was without my running buddy. And y'all, the 11 miler I did on Sunday was BRUTAL.

Miles 1-3 are my warm-up miles. I get myself situated and my body warmed up.

Miles 4-6 are my golden miles. It's when I really get into my rhythm. I usually have hit a water station or two by now and I feel my absolute best.

Miles 7-8 is when things tend to get a little harder.

I'm still very new to this running thing. Yes, I've been running all year, but long distances are a whole new world for me. I should also add that I really think my hardest through miles 1-8. I get out all my aggression or stress during that time.  I really lay out my troubles to God.

Guess what happens around 8.5-9 miles? I'm tired and my body starts to hurt. I am in good shape. At this point, my coach says that I am physically ready for this race. But long distances are hard on the body. They just are.

When I'm running with a buddy, this is where the encouragement and conversation is an EXCELLENT distraction. I hurt, but I am thinking about what the person is saying so I can contribute to the conversation.

My running coach also says that running by yourself is good for you mentally because you have to prove to yourself that you can do it.

Mile 8.5 hit this past Sunday and I felt like I couldn't go any further. Mercifully, there was a water station, so I got some water, walked through finishing my cup of water, and then started again.

And all I could think about was how sore I was.

I thought about how much further I still had to go. 2.5 miles isn't that far and is chump change in the grand scheme of things, but when they are the last of the 11 miles, things get hard and quick. 

When I hit mile 9, I took another walk break.  When you're training, my coach has told me to just stay on my feet the entire time and that a little walking doesn't hurt.

At this point, I didn't know how I was going to finish off the last two miles, but God did. I started saying out loud "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13)

I said it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over...

....and over and over and over and over again.

Around mile 10, I saw a lady and she asked me how far I was going, and I told her 11 miles. She said, "Just keep going!"

I didn't know this lady at all. But she knew my go-to phrase. And I got the energy I needed. I don't think that was coincidental either.

Right after I passed her, the light from the sun broke through the trees and lit up the running trail and I knew that it was one of those moments where God was just letting me know He saw me.

I cried when I hit mile 11. I even shouted "YES!" really loud!

Running those miles, just me and God, was a powerful moment for me.

I can't wait to run with Him on race day!

Word Vomit.

  1. October is going to be a big month for us. B takes his last MBA class. He is talking about getting his doctorate! I'm running a half-marathon in three weeks. AND we're adding to our family.
  2. I have been struggling a lot with being content and with what others say a lot recently. This struggle comes and goes. They usually strike the hardest when my relationship with Christ is off. You'd think I'd know better by now. I need to remember to pray about everything and to just be myself. The rest always follows.
  3. I love my husband and his need to be Mr. Fix It and my protector.
  4. I suck at goodbyes. 
  5. I also suck at being left out. 
  6. 4 and 5 are the recipe for me being a total hot mess. It is not pretty and I am more than ashamed at how ugly I can be sometimes.
  7. I am looking forward to October baseball.
  8. If you see a girl who looks like she's in her late 20s walking like she's in her late 80s, you probably saw me.
